Scandria®-Corridor at Green Corridor Demo Day in Malmö
The Scandria®-Corridor was presented during the Green Corridor Demo Day 2012 at 12 December in Malmö. At round about 30 stands, technology providers and green corridor projects could present themselves.
In a number of interesting talks with technology providers as well as representatives of corridor regions, the ambition of the Scandria-Corridor to become a green model corridor facilitated by a Scandria-Alliance could be demonstrated.
The set-up of a Scandria-Alliance was proposed by the Scandria-project partners and is currently promoted by the Baltic Sea Region project TransGovernance and the Baltic Sea Region Transport Cluster (http://transportcluster.eu).
As best Green Corridor Demo, the VEL®-wagon (www.vel-wagon.eu) designed by the Technical University Berlin, the Scandria project partner Royal Institute for Technology Stockholm and the Slovakian manufacturer Tatravagonka was chosen. Our best congratulations!

Multilevel governance in the Scandria corridor
During the next two years, the Joint Spatial Planning Department will develop instruments to actively involve stakeholders from the various policy levels and across sectors into the Scandria Corridor Development. Together with partners from Eastern Norway, Öresund Region and Rostock-Guldborgsund region a multilevel governance model will be tested as a showcase within the Baltic Sea Region project TransGovernance.
After getting started at the first partner meeting 13-14 November 2012 in Karlskrona, the project’s official kick-off will take place 17 January 2013 in Tallinn.

New high-speed track from Berlin to Southern GermanyScandria® is gaining momentum: Preliminary building works finished at the first section of the new high-speed track Berlin-Nuremberg-Munich. Travel time from Berlin to the South will be reduced significantly: Berlin-Erfurt from 2:30 hrs to 2 hrs after 2015; Berlin-Munich from 6:30 hrs to 3:45 hrs after 2017.

Impulse Venue Innovative Technologies for shifting of freight transport from Road to Rail in the SCANDRIA® - Corridor
On September 6, 2012, an Impulse Venue organized by the Joint Spatial Planning Department Berlin Brandenburg, Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture of the State of Brandenburg in collaboration with the Senate Administration for Urban Development and Environment of Berlin was held in the European House, Representation of the European Commission in Germany, Unter den Linden 78, 10117 Berlin, Germany.
The Venue was attended by more than 70 participants from Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland, and presented numerous approaches and ideas to implement more environmental friendly transport logistics concept in the European Transport corridors with specific emphasis on the Scandinavian-Adriatic corridor.
The one-day venue was inaugurated by his Excellency Christian Gaebler, State Secretary, Senate Administration for Urban Development and Environment, Berlin, and highlighted during three sessions the European and the spatial and the economic Framework conditions, objectives and interdependencies of development for sustainable transport and logistics solutions as well as innovative concepts pre-identified as relevant for further review when developing environmental more sound supply chain concepts.
Dr. Troche from the European Commission showed at the morning session that the tools of the Common European transport policy towards supra-regional and sustainable strategies and efficient and climate-friendly European transport systems. Dr. Erdmenger, German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, and Mr Bellati showed how the balanced regional and corridor development is influenced by the regional-economic potentials and their development at national and European levels. The strategy of the “Green Corridors” cannot easily and quickly be implemented, but it includes just this following comprehensive approach. In this respect, for example, Mr Behrens has explained to what extent the obviously highly specialized field of logistics helps develop spatial and economic potentials, and requests for additional, innovative concepts and solutions.
During the afternoon session, transnational cooperation, logistics and green transport corridors as well as potentials for implementation were discussed from the different aspects and viewpoints of how to deal with growth, innovation and sustainable allocation of resources as guiding principles of action at all levels. The attention paid to ports and inter-modalism in the North-South corridor was subject of various transnational projects Mr Engström and Mr Stevanato explained from the Scandinavian and the Adriatic perspective respectively. In this respect, representatives of the industry and the logistics and intermodal transport sector, Dr. Günter, Mr Amberg and Mr Possegger, as well as of ports, Mr Orlandi and Mr Lembke, explained to us clearly their ideas, concerns, thoughts and possible leverages for improvement needs.
As a main conclusion, orientation towards multimodal and rail transport in order to improve especially in land transport Energy-efficient and climate-friendly, safe, competitive and economic viable transport and logistics is an important key issue to facilitate sustainable growth. As many different innovative loading technologies are available, results of technically impressive demonstrations as the freight village Berlin West (Wustermark) highlight the importance to concentrate on significant improvement potentials in infrastructure and in co-operation and management issues, and business case development in addition to provision of techniques and infrastructure facilities.
The final session of the Venues addressed proposed fields of action and further proceeding. This venue and the preceding corridor development investigations and attempts were already initiatives according to the action plan on freight transport logistics of the European Commission in the creation of a Green Corridor. Mr Sjögren, who stood always in the first line of development of green corridors at national and European levels, highlighted the need of common and cooperating projects, and of coordinated activities of initiatives on e.g. climate-friendly ship traffic, block-train concepts, innovative logistics solution development, and use of climate-neutral energy.
The venue concluded with the common intention of all participants to further strengthen cooperation also at political level and to continue cooperation in a self-sustaining “Scandria Alliance” envisaged by a model at three levels:
Model of SCANDRIA®ALLIANCE
A core group will form the central element that coordinates political and technical work. Furthermore, it should ensure communication with the EU, the regions involved, entrepreneurs and science and administration. Implementation and processing of the strategic demands should be performed by several work groups. However, political agreement on common interests is required as well. Therefore, a common roof, a “SCANDRIA FORUM” being supported by the participating politicians forms the third level. In addition to the continued development of the Green Corridor, the Scandria Alliance will support and facilitate current sustainability and efficiency improvement issues through projects, studies and initiatives as well.
